The Mauritanian

Musical Language

Tom Hodge

After touching on some initial musical ideas, Tom goes into detail about his use of a Toolbox – a system for creating a collection of musical ideas to draw from throughout the score. In the case of The Mauritanian, the Toolbox consists of a collection of melodic ideas written by Tom and recorded by Violist and Conductor Rob Ames.

Tom goes on to demonstrate the Toolbox system in the cue he wrote as a pitch during the early days of the project. His initial ideas were born from a short ‘drone maker’, which was chopped up and manipulated into a composition which would go on to become Couch’s Theme.
