In this section Paul takes us through some the fundamentals of this score, exploring the themes and ideas which make up the score’s identity. Firstly he explores the idea of hope, which eventually became a motivation for a number of cues throughout the film. Paul explains his desire to use the music to reflect the emotional testimony delivered by the interviewees, rather than applying heavy music over devastating footage.
Using melody sparingly, holding back major and minor thirds and using a lightness of touch with instrumentation all result in a score which is able to achieve the very delicate balance required when scoring raw and emotive moments from real people’s lives.
