In this section Rael goes into detail about how the musical language emerged for his score to Mrs Harris Goes to Paris. The brief was to create “…a strongly memorable soundtrack with quite a classic sound to it…”. Initial film reference from the director were primarily older film from the 60s and 70s, including West Side Story.
Some of Rael’s primary tools for achieving the sound for this score are his unexpected sounds and rhythms. In this video he touches upon how this approach developed, and where he is drawing influence from. Specifically, the Tritone and Hemiola are used extensively alongside French Impressionist influenced melody and harmony.
