The Mauritanian

Score Concepts

Tom Hodge

Tom gives us a short overview of his approach to each character’s theme, as well as detailing some of the ideas behind the score. One of the concepts behind this score is the idea of setting up distinct character themes, and then allowing the to converge as the film’s narrative brings the characters closer together.

We also learn about how the score balances subjectivity in a film closely following a true story. Tom touches on how the film is told mostly from Mohamedou’s perspective, allowing for the score to be slightly more poetic than that of a documentary.
